In Delivery Rooms, Reducing Births of Convenience – NYTimes.com.

“Here’s a paradox, though: Despite the fact that unnecessary C-sections produce worse outcomes for more money, America’s C-section rate is growing fast — it has risen 50 percent in the last 10 years and now is used in a third of all births. This is not because of aging mothers or assisted reproduction — these make up a small fraction of births. Nor is it due to rising obesity — the two trends don’t track each other. The biggest increase in C-section rates is among women under 25. Most of the increase has come in low-risk births…”

“..the disorder is not always outwardly evident, as sufferers often keep the thoughts they grapple with a secret…

Nicknamed “the doubting disease”, the disorder is associated with hyperactivity in the part of the brain responsible for regulating distress. It also sets off compulsive behaviour, such as repeatedly checking locks and switches, which temporarily quells this sense of alarm…”

To Reduce Inequality, Start With Families – NYTimes.com – NYTimes.com.

“…Inequality among families isn’t just about financial means, however. It’s also about the care parents can provide, the food they can prepare, and the amount and the nature of the time they can spend with their children. But today, the ability of parents to make the most basic time investments in their children — taking time for parent-teacher conferences or setting a schedule that permits a parent to sometimes be home in the after-school hours — is sharply divided by income level.

The lack of availability of parental time has serious detrimental effects on children’s behavior, ability to learn and emotional development — all of which affect performance in school and, eventually, the workplace…”

Importance of sleep for early learning highlighted.

“Sleep plays a vital role in the early learning and development of babies and young children, a study has found.

Infants who nap are better able to apply lessons learned to new skills, while sleeping appears to help toddlers retain learned knowledge.

The US researchers looked at the ability of young children to recognise something similar but not identical to what they have learned and apply it to a new situation. Known as “generalisation,” examples include recognising the letter ‘A’ in different fonts, or understanding a word regardless of who speaks it.

“Sleep is essential for extending learning to new examples,” said study leader Dr Rebecca Gomez, from the University of Arizona…”

Plastic surgery app for nine-year-olds sparks outrage on Twitter | Technology | theguardian.com.

Apple and Google are facing a backlash from social media users for promoting cartoon plastic surgery apps to children as young as nine.

Messages on Twitter spoke of disgust over an iTunes game which shows a smiling cartoon character named Barbie about to go under the knife. Users of the app are placed in the role of a liposuction doctor.

The blurb for the app, created by Corina Rodriquez, reads: “This unfortunate girl has so much extra weight that no diet can help her. In our clinic she can go through a surgery called liposuction that will make her slim and beautiful. We’ll need to make small cuts on problem areas and suck out the extra fat. Will you operate her, doctor??”…

Thinking on obesity is overly simplistic – Education News | Primary, Secondary & Third Level | The Irish Time – Thu, Dec 19, 2013.

The simple thermodynamic conclusion that weight gain, leading to obesity, results from consistently ingesting more food calories than are burned off in various activities, hides the complex roots of the epidemic.

Prof Mike Gibney, director of the Institute of Food and Health, UCD, explains these roots in his book Something to Chew On: Challenging Controversies in Food and Health (UCD Press, 2012). Gibney argues persuasively that the two main popular explanations of the current epidemic of obesity, namely that the epidemic is caused by socio-economic and food-chain factors, are simplistic…

Research finds sleep a factor in childhood obesity – Health News | Irish Medical News | The Irish Times – Tue, Nov 05, 2013.

Putting children to bed earlier may be a simple way to keep their weight down, research has shown.

Childhood obesity is not only caused by fast food, sugary drinks and lack of exercise, the new findings suggest. Lack of sleep also appears to be an important factor.

Scientists made the discovery after adjusting the sleep patterns of 37 children aged eight to 11, more than a quarter of whom were overweight or obese…

British Dairy Farmer Creates Pure Milk Vodka | TIME.com.

While U.K. retailers are rationing baby milk powder and breast milk is being turned into jewelry, it seems that milk in all forms is proving to be a hot commodity.  And now one British dairy farmer is using the white stuff to make vodka.

Jason Barber has created the world’s first pure milk vodka from a herd of 250 grass-grazed cows at his farm in West Dorset, England, according to the Daily Mail.
