Ireland faces ‘into the unknown’ if referendum rejected | Irish Examiner.

Ireland will face “into the unknown” if voters reject the EU fiscal treaty, the Tánaiste has warned.

The foreign affairs minister said the chances of getting access to future bailouts from the IMF would be at risk, if the treaty was not passed in the May 31 referendum.

Credit unions that thrive vital for all via @independent_ie.

Credit unions enjoy exceptional popularity in Ireland. People love their friendliness and informality. Even in these cash-strapped times, their total deposits still amount to €12bn.

But like so many other Irish institutions, our 400-plus credit unions are in severe difficulties. Many of them have insufficient capital. Some are in serious danger. The figure for loans in arrears has been estimated at €1bn.

The final report of the Commission on Credit Unions, which was published yesterday, is likely to usher in major changes to the credit union movement. The future is likely to be one of fewer, larger credit unions offering a wider range of services to their members.

In common with other financial institutions, the economic downturn and the resulting bad debts has hit the credit union movement hard. With 51 of the country’s 403 credit unions failing to meet the requirement that their reserves exceed 10pc of their assets, of which 25 are seriously under-capitalised, the need for reform is clear.

I’m going to become violent with the next person to describe the €67.5bn loan Ireland received in 2010 as a bailout. It wasn’t a bailout for anyone except the private bondholders who took the debt of private, badly run, banks, who stood to lose everything, and ended up with all their money back, all to aid in the preservation of the stability of the European banking system.

‘Mission to Prey’ — the baseless accusation that set off a bomb via @independent_ie.

LAST May RTE broadcast a ‘Primetime Investigates’ programme entitled ‘Mission to Prey’. It alleged that Fr Kevin Reynolds had committed statutory rape by fathering a child with an underage Kenyan girl called Veneranda while she was working as a maid in a house he frequented in Africa 30 years ago…

RTE apologised to Fr Reynolds and accepted the allegations were baseless, without any foundation and untrue.

Rich-poor gap grew by over one-quarter in 2010.

THE GAP between the richest and poorest in Ireland grew by more than 25 per cent during 2010, new figures show.

A Central Statistics Office report on income and living conditions shows the average income of the top 20 per cent of earners was 5.5 times greater than those in the lowest 20 per cent.

This inequality ratio – up from 4.3 a year earlier – is the highest figure on record since this measurement was first used in 2004.
