IRIN Africa | MADAGASCAR: Sex for survival | Madagascar | Children | Economy | Gender Issues | HIV/AIDS (PlusNews) | Urban Risk.

ANTANANARIVO, 28 August 2012 (IRIN) – About one in seven residents of Madagascar’s main port city of Toamasina are sex workers.

In less than 20 years, the number of registered sex workers in the city of about 200,000 residents has climbed from 17,000 in 1993 to 29,000 in 2012. The increase has been driven by rising poverty levels as well as the city’s proximity to the recently opened Ambatovy nickel mine.

Construction of the mine, coupled with recent improvements to the port, saw an influx of thousands of foreign workers. The billion-dollar investments also resulted in an escalation in living costs and the collapse of traditional commercial activities like the collection and sale of cloves and coffee, pushing more young women into sex work.

“Girls come from the countryside to work as maids. Then, when they have a problem with their employer, other girls from their region introduce them to prostitution,” Germaine Razafindravao, the president of the local sex worker collective FIVEMITO (‘Fikambanaina Vehivavy Miavotena Toamasina’ or Women’s Future), told IRIN…

Elephant birth control to help reduce population via @independent_ie.

A South African province that is home to thousands of elephants is planning a birth control campaign to prevent a population explosion that could threaten plants and wildlife.

Unlike other parts of Africa where elephant stocks have dwindled to dangerously low levels due to poaching and a loss of habitat, South Africa has seen its populations steadily grow through conservation.

KwaZulu-Natal province, in the south-east, is planning to inject elephant cows with a vaccine to block sperm reception…

IPS – After Rio+ 20, the Path Ahead | Inter Press Service.

Jul 6 2012 (IPS) – Two weeks after the United Nations conference on sustainable development in Rio de Janeiro has left many lukewarm, activists, government representatives and U.N. officials are looking forward to setting new goals for the future.  “I think the world needs much more than what we achieved,” Heikki Holmas, Norwegian minister of international development, admitted at a press conference at U.N. headquarters in New York on Thursday.  Still, the focus of the discussion was less on casting blame than on how to move on and set new sustainable development goals for the future…

German court bans circumcision as assault on children via @independent_ie.

JEWISH and Muslim groups in Germany condemned a court ruling yesterday that deemed circumcision to be equivalent to grievous bodily harm.

The court in Cologne declared that the procedure violated a child’s “fundamental right to bodily integrity”. Religious groups claimed the ruling could lead to “circumcision tourism”.

The court said the right of the child outweighed that of parents in what legal experts said could be a landmark case.

allAfrica.com: Africa: What Does China Want in Africa?.

Recent stories about China’s growing interest in Africa are worth commenting on. For China, Africa is a source of cheap coal and oil, two vitally important resources for its energy needs. As for African states, China is the ideal commercial partner that seldom slaps special political pre-conditions upon its readily available suppliers, and regularly gives the continent diplomatic backing. …

Charities Act deferred over cost.

LEGISLATION THAT would require charities to make their financial information public has been deferred for cost reasons, Minister for Justice Alan Shatter has confirmed.

The Charities Act, providing for the regulation and supervision of the charitable sector, was passed in 2009 but has not been enacted in full. Mr Shatter said the prospect of full implementation was examined in the context of last year’s comprehensive review of expenditure.
