More than 2,000 men suffer domestic abuse, says Amen.

Almost 8,000 incidents of domestic abuse were reported from more than 2,000 men last year, the support service for male

sufferers of domestic violence Amen, has said.

According to Amen’s 2013 report, the number of domestic attacks on men is roughly the same as 2012.

But the charity said it is seeing a large increase in the number of men coming for face-to-face counselling.

The number of face-to-face meetings with men complaining of abuse has risen by about 64 per cent on 2011, says Amen service manager Niamh Farrell…

Tesco to no longer stock sweets at checkouts – Health News | Irish Medical News | The Irish Times – Wed, May 21, 2014.

Tesco stores around the country will no longer stock sweets and chocolates at checkouts from tomorrow.

The change will be fully implemented by the end of the year across all 146 stores.

Tesco Ireland chief executive Phil J Clarke said customers had “made it clear to us that removing sweets and chocolates from checkouts will help them to make healthier choices”.

Obesity expert Dr Eva Orsmond said: “Irish supermarkets have a clear role to play in helping parents and shoppers to make healthier choices for their families”…

In December 2012 the United Nations (UN) passed five resolutions condemning it. The motions were supported by all the countries in the African Union.

The procedure ranges in severity from a clitoridectomy, or the partial or total removal of the clitoris; excision, or the partial or total removal of the clitoris and the labia minora; infibulations, or the narrowing of the vaginal opening through the creation of a covering seal with or without a clitoridectomy.

The procedure can lead to multiple problems later in life. Infections, urinary incontinence, infertility, pain during sex and childbirth are among the problems faced by women who have been subjected to FGM.

The UN estimates that 140 million women have suffered FGM, two million girls a year are still subjected to the process. In parts of the Horn of Africa, FGM rates are more than 90 per cent. ..

Dublin student wins Young Scientist for maths project – Science News | Daily News from The Irish Times – Fri, Jan 10, 2014.

A Dublin student who found answers to previously unsolved mathematical problems has won the 50th BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition at the RDS. Paul Clarke undertook months of research into complex mathematical theory to become the young scientist of the year.

A project by students from Kinsale seeking to understand people’s attitudes to older people in the work force took the prize for best group. The runner up individual award went to a Dublin student who developed a laboratory management system and the runner up group prize was claimed by students from Mayo who designed and built a gumshield communication device for managers and players…

Minister for Communications Pat Rabbitte and Minister for Education RuairíQuinn announced that every secondary school will have access to 100Mbp/s connectivity by the beginning of the next school year, as they launched the final stage of the national project.

With high-speed broadband already installed in 516 schools through the project, yesterday’s announcement detailed a further 270 to be connected in counties Carlow, Cork, Kerry, Kilkenny, Limerick, Tipperary, Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow.

“Completing the final phase of the national programme will mean all our post-primary schools have been equipped with top class, future-proofed broadband,” said Mr Rabbitte.

“This will enable and motivate them to grasp the teaching and learning opportunities that the internet provides.”

The simple thermodynamic conclusion that weight gain, leading to obesity, results from consistently ingesting more food calories than are burned off in various activities, hides the complex roots of the epidemic.

Prof Mike Gibney, director of the Institute of Food and Health, UCD, explains these roots in his book Something to Chew On: Challenging Controversies in Food and Health (UCD Press, 2012). Gibney argues persuasively that the two main popular explanations of the current epidemic of obesity, namely that the epidemic is caused by socio-economic and food-chain factors, are simplistic…

Despite a minimum age limit of 13 years, 85% of nine to 12-year-olds are using social networking website Facebook, causing principals and teachers to have to deal with cyberbullying on an almost daily basis.

Irish anti-bullying service Bully 4U surveyed 1,720 children between nine and 17 years over the course of two months, asking them about their web usage. One section of the survey asked different age groups whether they were on Facebook and Twitter.

It found that 85% of nine to 12-year-olds were using Facebook and 35% were on Twitter. For 13 to 14-year-olds 97% were on Facebook and 50% were on Twitter. And in the 15 to 17-year-old category, 98% were on Facebook and 55% were on Twitter.
